Trunk and Neck Muscles-Actions
Action (Plane of Motion) | Flexion (Sagittal) | Extension (Sagittal) | Lateral Flexion (Frontal) | Rotation (Transverse) |
Description of Motion | Lumbar + Thoracic parts of vertebral column bend forwards (when measuring RoM, hip flexion should not be included) | In opposite direction of flexion | Side bending of trunk – occurs when the level of shoulders becomes inclined with respect to that of pelvis. Occurs towards both left and right sides. Adjacent parts of vertebral bodies of one side come closer together while on other side they become separated | Rotation of trunk is a summation of movement of individual vertebrae, allowing twisting of trunk to left or right, while shoulders stay level. Rotation of pelvis about hip joint increases rotation of shoulders. The pelvis should be fixed while assessing the degree of trunk rotation. |
Trunk = lumbar + thoracic parts of vertebral column
