Functions:
-Carrying and support of thoracic cage
-Giving attachment to many pectoral and
pelvic girdle muscles
-Providing anchorage for many powerful muscles which move the vertebral column and sustain erect posture
-Protection of spinal cord
-Shock absorption because of curvatures and intervertebral discs
-Production and accumulation of moments of force; and concentration and transmission of forces received from other parts of body – all this by virtue of its flexibility
