Muscles - continued

Skeletal Muscle Action

-Muscles act on all joints they cross, can ONLY PULL (not push)

-FOUR PROPERTIES – Extensibility, Elasticity, Irritability,

& Tension Development

-Force produced by skeletal muscle proportional to cross

sectional area

-Skeletal muscles produce force to move/stabilize skeleton

-Force is transferred to tendons, which pull on bones

-Bones move towards one another.

-Muscle attachment on more stationary, usually proximal

bone = ORIGIN

-Attachment on more movable, distal bone = INSERTION
